Q:I agree with everything you said except the wait times. I'm a fairly regular traveler out of CLT and on high-traffic periods, the security line ranges from 20 minutes to 90 minutes. I normally get to the airport 2 hours in advance during Monday mornings or Friday afternoons (if I can't fly any other time) because of this. It's even worse during holidays - I've been in a stationary security line for 2+ hours near Christmastime. The x-ray backscatter machines they've now got at the terminals (when they're in use) make it even worse, as each takes about 2x as long as going through the metal detector.
Of course, most of the delay seems to be people who can't follow directions, try to carry drinks in their bags, don't take their shoes/jacket/wallet chains off and end up having to go through the metal detector 2-3 times before they clear security - so we're right back to your advice, which is something I wish everyone would be forced to read and sign a copy of before they were allowed to get in the security line.
I might have been traveling during off-peak hours then. I’ve made it through both CLT, HOU, and SLC security in 10 minutes or less at times.
Like you said, the delays are caused by people being stupid. Not being able to read. Not caring. So instead of getting through the checkpoint in a reasonable time they end up being stuck there for 10-15 minutes. Then they bitch because they were too retarded to read the very simple directions that come with very simple illustrations. Children can read those instructions without problem.
