Why your server hates you
annoyatron: crickets and tumbleweed: Why your server hates you
I agree, T. But I work in an upper-scale French restaurant where we only have 5 table stations so that we CAN give good service. For the most part, people are friendly but coming in with a bad, pretentious attitude where you run your server around, could prevent another table from getting good service. If you have a large party of drinkers and don’t express that you’d like separate checks, asking for them at the end its impossible to remember what everyone had. Most computers have the function to take several credit cards and split equally so cash isn’t a necessity when taking multiple payments. I live in a vacation city where we get a large amount of Europeans. They don’t know they’re supposed to tip off the total check. A server knows when he or she has given a table bad service and doesn’t expect a decent tip. Its those that have received great service and don’t tip accordingly. You ask for a well done steak and then ask why your food is taking so long. The rest of your table’s food was done 15 minutes ago but we can’t bring it to them because you like to take a perfectly good cut of meat and make it inedible to any human that doesn’t suck.
You…
That’s definitely a problem if your customers treat you that way. When I’ve been to upper-scale Italian or French restaurants I have never had bad service. Therefore I have always tipped well. I suppose the Europeans are not used to tipping properly. Different cultures.
Totally agree with splitting the tab out on multiple cards. Especially in your environment. Letting the waitress know beforehand that you will be on separate checks is a good idea, and I usually do if I am in a larger party. I try to wrangle people up and make them decide right in the beginning what kind of check arrangements everybody is on. That way you can actually leave the place without several hours worth of trying to decipher the check after the fact.
