Let’s put the “Happy” back in “Happy Christmas”

I’ve seen a few posts and news items in the last few years about people who say they want to put the ‘Christ’ back in ‘Christmas’. Hearing people say “Happy Holidays” offends them, so they’re making a point of wishing people a “Happy Christmas”.

Personally, as an atheist, hearing someone wish me a happy Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Chinese New Year does not offend me. If someone is sincere in their wishes for me to enjoy the current time of year, that they want me to experience the next few days/weeks without trouble or hardship, then I am happy to accept their kind thoughts, no matter what denomination.

Hell, if someone were to wish me a happy pregnancy and I could see that they genuinely hoped that the next nine months of my life went well, I probably wouldn’t correct them.

But if someone wished me a “Happy CHRISTmas!” with the kind of ‘ner ner nerner ner’ sincerity that children have when told by an adult to be good sports to someone they just beat at musical chairs, then I’d find that offensive.

If you say it not to mean that you hope I fare well over the season, or that you wish me happiness, but instead use the phrase as shorthand for “Yeah, I’m a Christian, what are you gonna do about it?” then you’re the one who doesn’t know the true meaning of Yuletide.

Removing the sincerity of ”Happy” from “Happy Christmas” in order to score political points makes the phrase meaningless and undermines the whole point of the greeting. It effectively negates the message, and your own claims to the ‘Christianness’ of your wishes along with it.

So yeah. Wish me a happy Christmas. Wish me a happy holidays, season, December, New Year, fiscal year end, whatever: I’ll be happy as long as the first word is meant with honesty, and not as a semantic side salad that allows you to promote your views and supposedly annoy liberals.

Let’s put the ‘Happy’ back in ‘Happy Christmas’.
