Memory Hog
I was curious why my computer was so slow this morning. My daughter had FireFox left on, so I hit the task manager to see it’s memory usage and was quite surprised.
So I opened FireFox, Safari, Google Chrome and the hated Explorer to the Tumblr homepage and this is what I got…
Safari was not only one of the worst but it also installs something called WebKit2WebProcess (I had to look it up). Safari and FireFox eventually both topped out around 210,000K
Google Chrome may or may not be better. It seems to stay around 65,000K but it also seems to open imaginary multiple pages, each using the same amount of memory. I’m pretty sure I only have one page open with only a single tab but in the time I’ve been writing this post it it now listed 5 times.
The browser I hate the most, Explorer is using the least of my computer’s memory. I am VERY disappointed.
The only solution is to buy more memory. Firefox may be a memory hog, but it does not slow me down at all. Then again, my computer is a monster.
*edit - the buy more memory thing was being silly, I just read this and it looked like I was being an asshole or something. Its meant like “my car is not running right, time for a new car”
Chrome usually runs a process per open tab as well as a process per plugin running in the background. The more plugins you have installed, the more memory you use. I tend to be quite frugal in my plugin selection. Another good idea is to run with Flash blocker or similar to not run on-page plugins until you actually want them to run. Especially if you have a lot of tabs open.
Then again, I have 12 GB of RAM in this 8 core CPU laptop and couldn’t give a fuck. ;-)

That might be a bit of a red herring, because Explorer is built throughout the OS, so it really just hooks a new Windows process to launch a browser, but the others have to build the frames themselves.
