Iraq war veteran suffers life-threatening injuries after being struck in the head at Occupy Oakland protest
Doctors in Oakland, California, struggled on Wednesday to save the life of an Iraq war veteran became a rallying cry for the Occupy Wall Street movement after he was badly wounded in clashes between protesters and police.
Scott Olsen, 24, a former U.S. Marine who served two tours of duty in Iraq, was struck in the head by a tear gas canister fired on Tuesday by police trying to prevent protesters from reclaiming a public square, protest organizers said. I feel bad for ALL PARTIES involved and here’s why:
1) I know it’s cool to bag on authority, but have you ever been to Oakland? It’s probably one of the shittiest fucking cities in California. These cops got shit on constantly I’m sure. I have my own issues with authority. I’m not an uppity white person looking down on everyone from my palace. I’ve been arrested, spent time in jail. I dislike police, but they’re there for a reason and I respect that. I’ve also NEEDED police. Plus, it seems like people have forgot all their emotional softness that came with police being “heroes” and such from 9/11.
2) Tear gas IS a way to handle crowd control in a non violent way. This is clearly an accident, so don’t act like this is fucking the military shooting into a crowd in Kent state like in the 60s. The reason the cops were there is because of health code. THEY WERE SHITTING IN THE STREETS. Unfortunately, this guy got dinged in the head. He’ll pull through and the city of Oakland will pay for it as well as a settlement for an undisclosed amount of money. I’m really sorry for the guy but I have faith that he’ll be okay.
My thing is about this is people are so fucking soft. People protest and expect they have nothing to lose. Peaceful demonstrations are cool and all, but you are people camping in the street. Logically, you’re going to get some flack. You don’t live there, the property isn’t yours. Expect resistance. Be glad you are allowed to be in a county where you can not like what Yemen is going through now and being shot at.
Off my tree stump now.
Pretty much sums things up. Things learned from these events: 1) Don’t shit in the street. 2) Don’t try to bounce teargas canisters off of your skull. I hope the veteran doesn’t suffer any permanent damage due to the accident.
